Children & Adolescents
Think of a child’s mind—the possibilities, the openness, the future. You would do anything to protect and nurture the potential. So when difficulties arise in school, at home, or in coping with the challenges of life, you want to help. But children require a different expertise and approach than adults. Just as you choose educators and pediatricians who have the talent and temperament for working with children, parents choose us because we specialize in children’s development and behavior.

Of course, pediatricians, school counselors, clinicians, and other family members refer children and adolescents to us for a variety of concerns as well.

Adults
Mood or anxiety medications can create the dramatic improvements seen on some television commercials. But it takes an experienced and perceptive therapist to prescribe the right medicine or right mix of treatments for each person’s unique strengths, needs, and preferences. At Columbia Associates, we are experienced in helping adults cope with the particularly demanding circumstances that can arise throughout life.

Families
The family can be the most rewarding, yet most complicated, relationship dynamic in our lives. Maintaining positive communication during times of crisis provides the resilience that families need. At Columbia Associates, helping families flourish despite the stresses of modern living is part of our vision of a healthier, more satisfying tomorrow.

All Columbia Associates’ clinicians have advanced training in working with children, adolescents, and adults—allowing us to correctly diagnose both common and difficult-to-identify disorders. Our specialties include mood, anxiety, attention, and obsessive-compulsive disorders.

Treatment begins with an initial evaluation and recommendations—which often combine psychotherapy and medication for complete care, as well as exercise and relaxation techniques. Psychotherapy may include individual, group, or play therapy with family involvement to enhance understanding and improve relationships. We also take the time to educate patients about the consequences of hormonal imbalances, poor nutrition, and other factors that may worsen physical or emotional ailments. We consider all aspects of a person’s life, partnering with primary care physicians, schools and other clinicians to coordinate care.

Since the patient’s situation often impacts those around them, we provide support for family members as well. This often involves educating them about mental illness and teaching them how to work with the patient to overcome relationship and communication challenges.
